Junior Club

Once skaters have passed USA Learn to Skate Basic Skills 1, BMVFSC provides new avenues to receive skating instruction and expose skaters to figure skating as a sport to enable them to determine if they want to continue down this path.

This starts with Junior Club, which is a great way for your child to learn and develop their skating skills. Taught by BMVFSC Professionals, members can learn in smaller groups that feature more tailored and reactive lesson plans. The Junior Club has the full sheet of ice available when practicing and receiving lessons. These qualities lead to a more socially welcoming environment where skaters can make new friends and also begin to independently explore skating as well.

If the Junior Club member/family and coaches agree, Junior Club members can also buy on to other club ice times and engage in private lessons from the BMVFSC coaching staff for more focused work on skating skills.

Structure of a Typical Junior Club Session

  1. Skaters warm up together as a group on the ice.
  2. Skaters will be divided into small groups based on skating skills. Each group will work on refining and developing skills suited for their abilities. For example, various groups may work on footwork, while others work on power skills (speed and edges), and another group works on introductory jumps (i.e., Waltz Jump, half-flip).
  3. Individual skating time. Skaters use this time to work in a self-directed manner on the new skills they are learning, and socialize with new friends.
  4. Final group meeting/activity and end of session. For example, the coaches may gather skaters at center ice to discuss upcoming events or may set up a game for the members of Junior Club to play for the last few minutes of the session.

Junior Club Costs

Club Membership: $60 per year

Ice Cost: Junior Club sessions are $15 per session and are contracted quarterly (for example, ice costs for a session with 10 skating weeks would be $150 total).

A skater joining after the start of a contract will have ice costs prorated for the number of weeks left in the contract.

Additionally, with coach approval, Junior Club members may contract for ice during Senior Club/Junior Club Skills sessions throughout the year at $20 per session. Ice buy-ons are $21 per 60 minute session.

Fundraising: During your first fiscal year as a Junior Club member there are no fundraising requirements.* After your first year, there is a $100 annual fundraising commitment to fulfill.

The fundraising year runs from July 1 to June 30. BMVFSC organizes fundraisers at different points during the year and offers a scrip (buying rewards) program year round through RaiseRight. To receive more information about scrip, contact Susan Quarandillo.

Volunteering: During your first fiscal year as a Junior Club member there is no volunteering requirement.* After your first year, there is a 10-hour annual volunteer commitment.

These hours can be fulfilled at several events held throughout the membership year (primarily Autumn Skate Fest and Impressions on Ice).

*For any Junior Club families joining before the spring Impressions on Ice show, they will not incur a requirement during the remainder of that fiscal year. Anyone joining after the Impressions on Ice Show will have the requirement waived for the following year. For example, families joining in November 2025 or February 2026 would not have a requirement until Fiscal Year 2026, which starts July 1, 2026; they would have to meet the fundraising and volunteering requirements between July 1, 2026 and June 30, 2027. Families joining May 2026 or June 2026 would not have a requirement until the year starting July 1 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a Junior Club Program?

A: BMVFSC's Junior Club Program is tailored to younger skaters who would like to further pursue skating beyond the Basic Skills level (often called “Learn to Skate Classes”). Junior Club does not have to take the place of Learn To Skate classes, but is an opportunity to have additional ice time and make progress faster.

Q: Why join BMVFSC's Junior Club Program?

A:BMVFSC's Junior Club Program is a natural progression in a skater’s training. It serves as a bridge to introduce the skater and family to Club Membership.

Q: Who can join BMVFSC's Junior Club Program?

A: Anyone with enthusiasm, dedication and the desire to succeed in the sport of Figure Skating.

Q: Can I try it out before signing up?

A: Of course! Contact Mckensi Long or the BMVFSC coaching staff to arrange a time to join a Junior Club session for free.

Q: How do I join?

A: Reach out to Mckensi Long and she will help guide you in the process of joining Burnsville-MN Valley Figure Skating Club and help answer any questions you might have about the sport of figure skating and “how it all works” at our Club!

Q: When can I join?

A:Membership is open to anyone at anytime. The regular Club Membership year goes from July 1-June 30 each year. The cost of the Club Membership is prorated based on when you join; if needed, new members can buy on to ice sessions until the next contract period.

Q: How do competitions work? Do you have to compete if you are a member of the club?

A: Junior Club skaters do not have to compete at any point in the year. Competitions require that each skater have a United States Figure Skating-associated coach for the competition. At BMVFSC, our coaches, the skater, and the skaters' family collaborate to determine which competition is right for the skater, at what level the skater will compete, and select the music for the skater (if applicable). The coach will work with the skater on the routine, and be there with the skater on the competition date. Note that additional coaching time and fees associated with travel vary from coach to coach and are in addition to the Junior Club membership and ice costs.

BMVFSC typically runs an optional program for our Junior Club members to compete at our home competition, Autumn Skate Fest, for reduced costs. Competing at the same time as other Junior Club members builds confidence and makes for a memorable and fun competition experience!

Q:What are ice shows? How do they work?

A: Ice shows are skating exhibitions featuring groups of skaters in choreographed routines to music associated with a shared theme. Our annual ice show is Impressions on Ice, held every spring (though we have other, smaller exhibitions during other times of the year). Typically, only members of a club are welcome to skate at a club's ice show.

Participation is optional, and the fee for each number includes practice time and costumes. Junior club members who choose to participate skate in groups in one or more numbers during the show; solos, duets, and trios are reserved for Senior Club members and awarded based on the skaters' performance during the year.
